Fox News is covering the story of a transmasculine activist, Lindsey Spero, who defiantly injected testosterone in front of the Florida Board of Medicine on February 10. Spero was among a group protesting the Board’s decision to ban gender affirming care for youth in the state.

The activist took out a syringe and struck their stomach with the needle.

While Fox News’ aim in covering the story is clearly to present Spero as radical and bizarre, it’s also some of the only coverage of protests against bans on gender affirming care that have broken through into the right wing media bubble.

The right wing obsessively covers detransition activists and activist parents and presents their stories in the most flattering possible lights, but people who are fighting for trans rights are ignored unless they can be portrayed as absurd or extreme. Absurd or extreme protests are therefore one of the only ways that any information about trans people’s oppositions to these bans can find coverage in the right wing press.
